Stockmann a German named individual registered the Punch brand in 1840. The name is derived from a European puppet show character called Mr. Punch. The brand accomplished much success particularly in the Great Britain and in 1874 Luis Corujo bought the brand and got ownership. It later changed hands again when Manuel Lopez Fernandez bought the brand in 1884. Manuel later retired in 1924 and shortly thereafter he passed away, ownership had been passed on to Esperanza Valle Comas. The brand was later bought by the Fernandez Palicio y Cia firm in 1930. After the United States set an embargo against Cuba, Fernando fled Cuba and settled in Florida where he sold his cigar lines to Frank Llaneza and Dan Blumenthal of Villazon & Co. which continues to make the Punch, Belinda and Hoyo de Monterrey cigars.

The Punch cigar provides a medium to full-bodied taste and utilizes an Ecuadorian wrapper. The Cuban seed tobacco fillers hail from Honduras, Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. The maduro versions of the Punch cigars utilize a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper. The Punch cigars do not disappoint, they are smooth and come in a variety of different brands including Punch Deluxe, Punch Gran Cru, Punch Gran Puro and Punch Rare Corojo among others. It also produces the Cigarritos Reserva and Cigarritos which are machine-made cigarillos.

The following are some of the popular Punch cigar brands

The Punch Grand Cru

The pre-light offers a sweet tobacco flavor and as you continue to puff away more flavors emerge including earth with hints of coffee, wood and dark chocolate. This combination is accompanied by a hint of sweetness. The wood and chocolate flavors are quite intense at the end, somewhat harsh than smooth. Other than the harshness felt at the finish, this is a good cigar and best enjoyed in the afternoon while relaxing.

Towards the finish earth flavors emerge with slight hints of sour cream and as you come to the very end the spicy notes become more intense. The Puro with its distinct flavors and rich blend of premium tobaccos is definitely well worth a try.
